Noventa minutos, y un templo con una historia particular

El templo Lakshminarayan, todos lo llaman Birla Mandir, fue construido por la familia industrial Birla entre 1933 y 1939, e inaugurado por Mahatma Gandhi con una condición: que se admitiera a personas de todas las castas.

En 1939 eso no era poca cosa. El acceso a los templos para los dalits era una de las luchas centrales de la época, y la condición de Gandhi convirtió este edificio en una declaración y no solo en una donación.

Esa es la razón para pasar aquí hora y media en lugar de fotografiarlo desde la carretera.

El templo

Dedicado a Lakshminarayan, Vishnu con su consorte Lakshmi. Tres pisos de arenisca crema y ocre rojo en estilo Nagara, con altos shikharas curvados y una gran cantidad de talla, construido en 6,27 acres.

Santuarios laterales honran a Shiva, Durga, Krishna, Hanuman, Ganesha y al Shiv Parivar.

El Sheesh Mahal y el Geeta Bhawan se usan para discursos en lugar de culto, y los jardines de detrás albergan fuentes y escenas esculpidas, incluido un conjunto bastante sorprendente sobre la mitología hindú que gusta a los niños.

El arquitecto fue Sris Chandra Chatterjee, que trabajaba en un idioma indio deliberadamente revivalista en un momento en que la mayoría de la construcción pública en Delhi la realizaban los británicos en un estilo completamente distinto.
