La torre con la que empezó la Delhi islámica, y un pilar que nadie explica.

El Qutub Minar son 72,5 metros de arenisca roja acanalada y mármol, comenzado en 1192 por Qutb-ud-din Aibak y terminado por sus sucesores a lo largo de los 180 años siguientes, que es la razón de que los estilos cambien a medida que asciende. Es el alminar de ladrillo más alto del mundo y el sitio UNESCO más antiguo de Delhi. No se puede subir: el acceso se cerró después de una avalancha humana en 1981 y no ha vuelto a abrirse.

El conjunto que lo rodea es la sustancia real. Quwwat-ul-Islam, la mezquita más antigua que se conserva en el norte de la India, construida con la piedra de templos demolidos, con talla hindú todavía visible en columnas reutilizadas en lugar de labradas de nuevo. El Alai Darwaza, la puerta de 1311 que es una de las primeras cúpulas verdaderas construidas en la India. Y el Alai Minar inacabado, pensado para tener el doble de altura que el Qutub y abandonado a los 24 metros cuando murió quien lo mandó levantar.

Y después el pilar de hierro. Siete metros, más de seis toneladas, fundido hacia el siglo IV, en pie al aire libre en el clima de Delhi desde hace más de 1.600 años y casi sin óxido. La explicación pasa por un alto contenido de fósforo que forma una película protectora, y sigue siendo el objeto más citado de la historia de la metalurgia india.

La entrada para extranjeros es de 600 ₹; los ciudadanos indios pagan 40 ₹.
El transporte no está incluido en la opción básica. El recinto está en la Línea Amarilla, estación Qutub Minar, a unos quince minutos a pie o un trayecto corto en autorickshaw desde la estación.
No se puede entrar ni subir al alminar, y no se puede tocar el pilar de hierro, hoy vallado.
El Parque Arqueológico de Mehrauli está al lado, con una docena más de tumbas y pozos escalonados, casi siempre vacíos, si le queda otra hora.
