Dos estaciones de montaña, y no se parecen

Shimla es una ciudad administrativa colonial a 2.200 metros. Manali es un valle de huertos y ríos a 2.000 metros. Ambas son frescas, verdes y completamente distintas de las llanuras, y seis días son lo que exigen las carreteras de montaña.

Shimla

Los británicos trasladaron aquí todo el gobierno de la India cada verano a partir de 1864, archivos, virrey, cuartel general del ejército y todo, porque Delhi era insoportable. Lo que dejaron es una ciudad que no se parece a ningún otro lugar del país.

The Ridge y Mall Road son solo para peatones, flanqueadas por edificios coloniales: la Christ Church, la segunda más antigua del norte de la India, y el Viceregal Lodge, donde se tomó la decisión de dividir la India en 1947 y cuyas salas revestidas de teca están abiertas a los visitantes.

El templo de Jakhoo se encuentra en el punto más alto bajo una estatua de Hanuman de 33 metros, tras una empinada caminata por bosque de cedro del Himalaya. Los monos de allí toman las gafas; déjelas en el coche.

Manali

Ocho horas más adelante por el valle de Kullu junto al Beas.

El templo de Hadimba Devi, construido en 1553 en madera de cedro con techo de pagoda, se alza en un bosque de cedros que parece más antiguo que el edificio. Vashisht para las aguas termales, el valle de Solang para la nieve y el parapente, y Old Manali para el final tranquilo del viaje.

El trayecto subiendo el valle es el propio atractivo, huertos, río, y pueblos de techos de pizarra.

Coche privado y conductor durante todo el recorrido, con hoteles.

Las carreteras son largas curvas en zigzag, y el tramo Shimla-Manali es un día completo. Lleve algo para el mareo si lo necesita.

Ambas localidades son frías de noviembre a marzo y pueden tener nieve en enero. El paso de Rohtang, más allá de Manali, solo abre aproximadamente de mayo a octubre y necesita un permiso aparte.
