El monumento mejor restaurado de la India

La tumba de Humayun merece una visita guiada tanto por la historia de su conservación como por su arquitectura. El Aga Khan Trust for Culture trabajó aquí durante una década a partir de 2007: retiraron alrededor de un millón de pies cúbicos de tierra que ocupantes posteriores habían vertido sobre el jardín, recuperaron los niveles originales, reconstruyeron los canales de agua para que vuelvan a fluir, y recolocaron la piedra a mano.

Antes de eso, esto era una ruina agradable en un césped. Ahora está cerca de lo que Bega Begum encargó.

Por qué importa

Ella la construyó para su marido en 1565, nueve años después de su muerte, y trajo a un arquitecto persa para hacerlo. El resultado fue la primera gran tumba-jardín mogol de la India, y estableció todas las convenciones que el Taj Mahal siguió sesenta y siete años después, la tumba en el centro de un charbagh de cuatro partes dividido por canales de agua, la cúpula doble, arenisca roja con incrustación de mármol blanco, y simetría llevada al milímetro.

Por dentro

Una cámara octogonal sobre una plataforma de casi siete metros de altura. Humayun está enterrado aquí, y también más de cien otros mogoles, príncipes, esposas, nobles, sepultados en las cámaras laterales a lo largo de los dos siglos siguientes. A veces se le llama el dormitorio de los mogoles.

En 1857, el último emperador, Bahadur Shah Zafar, se refugió en esta tumba y fue capturado aquí por los británicos.

El resto del complejo

La tumba de Isa Khan, veinte años más antigua, con su propio recinto octogonal y mezquita, y normalmente completamente vacía. La Tumba del Barbero en el jardín principal, cuyo ocupante nadie ha identificado. Y el Nila Gumbad, la tumba de cúpula azul fuera del muro este, recuperada de terreno ferroviario en la misma restauración.
