Varanasi y de vuelta entre dos noches

De Delhi a Varanasi hay 800 km. Por carretera eso es un día de ida, uno de vuelta; por aire son noventa minutos, la única forma de que esto funcione en un solo día. Vuelo temprano de ida, vuelo de la tarde de vuelta, y un día completo sobre el terreno con coche y guía.

Es un día largo que cubre muchísimo. Si puede permitirse una noche, quédese, pero esto existe porque la mayoría de la gente en un viaje de dos semanas por la India no puede.

Sarnath

Primera parada, a diez kilómetros del lado del aeropuerto de la ciudad. Aquí es donde Buda pronunció su primer sermón tras la iluminación, exponiendo las Cuatro Nobles Verdades a cinco compañeros en un parque de ciervos.

La estupa de Dhamek marca el lugar, un cilindro de ladrillo y piedra de 43 metros, la estructura actual data de alrededor del año 500 d. C. La estupa de Chaukhandi marca donde se encontró con esos compañeros. Y el pilar de Ashoka, cuyo capitel de cuatro leones está en el museo de aquí: ese grabado es el original del emblema nacional de la India, el que aparece en cada billete y pasaporte indio.

El museo es pequeño, excelente, y sin fotografía.

Kashi Vishwanath

El templo de Shiva en el corazón de la ciudad vieja, uno de los doce jyotirlinga, y uno de los sitios religiosos más visitados de la India. La seguridad es estricta, las colas son largas, y no se permiten teléfonos ni bolsos, déjelos en el coche.

Los callejones alrededor son demasiado estrechos para cualquier vehículo y forman la parte habitada más antigua de la ciudad.

La barca

En el Ganges a última hora de la tarde, por los ghats. Todo el frente fluvial se lee como una sola fachada de piedra continua desde el agua, tal como fue construida para ser vista.

Las piras de cremación de Manikarnika arden sin interrupción desde hace siglos. Fotografiar allí está prohibido, absolutamente, y su guía le dirá dónde está el límite.

Ganga Aarti

En el ghat de Dashashwamedh tras el anochecer: lámparas de latón escalonadas, campanas, caracolas e incienso, realizada por sacerdotes que se mueven al unísono exacto frente a miles de personas en las escalinatas.

Luego el aeropuerto, y Delhi por la noche.
