La barca del amanecer

La razón para venir. Una barca a remo por los ghats con la primera luz, cuando todo el frente fluvial se vuelve hacia el amanecer: miles de personas bañándose, lavando ropa, rezando, practicando yoga en las escalinatas, sacerdotes bajo sombrillas de hojas de palma, búfalos de pie en las aguas poco profundas.

Desde el agua, los ghats se leen como una sola fachada de piedra continua, tal como estaban destinados a ser vistos. Los palacios por encima fueron construidos por maharajás de toda la India que querían una casa en este río.

Manikarnika está en este tramo. Sus piras de cremación arden sin interrupción desde hace siglos, porque los hindúes creen que morir en Varanasi pone fin al ciclo de reencarnación, y llegan cuerpos aquí desde todo el país.

Fotografiar allí está prohibido. Es absoluto, su guía le dirá dónde está el límite, y son funerales.

La Ganga Aarti

En el ghat de Dashashwamedh tras el anochecer: siete sacerdotes sobre plataformas elevadas con lámparas de latón escalonadas, caracolas, campanas, incienso y tambores, moviéndose al unísono exacto durante unos cuarenta y cinco minutos, frente a miles de personas en las escalinatas y en barcas.

La ciudad vieja

Callejones demasiado estrechos para cualquier vehículo y entre los habitados continuamente más antiguos del mundo. Kashi Vishwanath, uno de los doce jyotirlinga, la seguridad es estricta y no se permiten teléfonos ni bolsos. Talleres de tejedores de seda, y kachori-sabzi de pie para el desayuno.
