La barca

Una barca a remo por los ghats. Desde el agua, todo el frente fluvial se lee como una sola fachada de piedra continua, tal como fue construida para ser vista, los palacios por encima de las escalinatas fueron levantados por maharajás de toda la India que querían una casa en este río.

Al atardecer, las lámparas salen al agua en barquitas de hojas, cientos de ellas, y los ghats se llenan.

Manikarnika, el principal lugar de cremación, está en este tramo. Sus fuegos arden sin interrupción desde hace siglos, porque los hindúes creen que morir en Varanasi pone fin al ciclo de reencarnación, y llegan cuerpos aquí desde toda la India.

Ganga Aarti en Dashashwamedh

Realizada cada tarde en el ghat principal: siete sacerdotes sobre plataformas elevadas, lámparas de latón escalonadas, caracolas, campanas, incienso y tambores, moviéndose al unísono exacto durante unos cuarenta y cinco minutos.

Miles observan desde las escalinatas y desde barcas. Es ruidoso, solemne, y completamente absorbente, y se ha hecho de alguna forma durante mucho tiempo.

Una barca es el mejor asiento si puede conseguir una, observa a los sacerdotes con la ciudad detrás en lugar de la espalda de una multitud.
