Siete días, y los últimos dos son la razón

El Triángulo de Oro toma cuatro días aquí, sin prisas. Luego el tren hacia el este a Varanasi, que no es como ningún otro lugar del itinerario ni de la India.

Días 1-2: Delhi

Llegada y traslado, con la tarde libre.

Luego el Fuerte Rojo, la Jama Masjid y un paseo en rickshaw por Chandni Chowk; el Raj Ghat, donde Gandhi fue incinerado en 1948; India Gate, el Parlamento y Qutub Minar con su columna de hierro de 1.600 años sin oxidar.

Días 3-4: Agra y Jaipur

El Taj Mahal, mejor al amanecer, y el fuerte de Agra con la torre donde Shah Jahan murió prisionero de su propio hijo. Fatehpur Sikri en el camino hacia el oeste, luego el fuerte de Amber, el City Palace, el Jantar Mantar y el Hawa Mahal.

Días 5-7: Varanasi

El tren hacia el este, incluido en todas las opciones.

Un paseo en barca al amanecer por los ghats es la experiencia central. Todo el frente fluvial se vuelve hacia el amanecer mientras miles de personas se bañan, lavan ropa, rezan y practican yoga en las escalinatas a la vez, y los edificios por encima se leen como una sola fachada de piedra continua desde el agua, tal como fueron construidos para ser vistos.

Al anochecer, la Ganga Aarti en el ghat de Dashashwamedh: lámparas de latón escalonadas, campanas, caracolas e incienso, realizada por sacerdotes al unísono exacto frente a miles de personas en las escalinatas y en barcas.

En Manikarnika y Harishchandra, las piras de cremación arden sin interrupción, porque los hindúes creen que morir en Varanasi pone fin al ciclo de reencarnación. Fotografiar en los ghats de cremación está prohibido, absolutamente.

Los callejones de la ciudad vieja son demasiado estrechos para coches. Kashi Vishwanath, los talleres de tejedores de seda, y kachori-sabzi de pie para el desayuno.

Sarnath, a once kilómetros, es el lugar donde Buda pronunció su primer sermón tras la iluminación.
