Más tranquila que el Taj, y la misma idea sesenta años antes

La tumba de Humayun recibe solo una fracción de los visitantes del Taj Mahal, y es el edificio del que procede el Taj. Si tiene una tarde en Delhi y un solo monumento en usted, es este.

El encargo

Bega Begum la construyó para su marido en 1565, nueve años después de su muerte, y trajo a un arquitecto persa, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, para diseñarla. Se dice que dedicó el resto de su vida al proyecto.

El resultado fue la primera gran tumba-jardín mogol de la India: la tumba en el centro de un charbagh de cuatro partes dividido por canales de agua, bajo una cúpula doble, en arenisca roja con incrustación de mármol blanco, simétrica al milímetro.

Cada uno de esos elementos reaparece en el Taj en 1632, a mayor escala y en mármol blanco. El linaje es directo.

Por dentro

Una cámara octogonal sobre una plataforma de casi siete metros de altura, con nichos arqueados en cada cara.

Humayun yace aquí, y también más de cien otros mogoles, príncipes, esposas y nobles sepultados en las cámaras laterales a lo largo de los dos siglos siguientes, razón por la que a veces se le llama el dormitorio de los mogoles.

El último emperador, Bahadur Shah Zafar, se escondió en esta tumba en 1857 y fue capturado aquí.

El jardín

El Aga Khan Trust for Culture lo restauró durante una década a partir de 2007, retirando alrededor de un millón de pies cúbicos de relleno de tierra posterior para recuperar los niveles originales y reconstruyendo los canales de agua para que vuelvan a correr. Es el mejor trabajo de conservación del país.

Llegue temprano y los canales tendrán agua, y la luz desciende directamente por el eje.

También merece el paseo

La tumba de Isa Khan, dentro del complejo, veinte años más antigua que la de Humayun, con su propio recinto y mezquita, y casi siempre vacía.
