Nueva Delhi en una tarde

Nueva Delhi no es una ciudad para caminar. De la India Gate al Qutub Minar hay 17 km, y entre ambos quedan una tumba, un templo y la casa de un presidente. Un coche con guía durante cinco horas es la única forma sensata de verlos de una vez, y esto es exactamente eso: sin autocar, sin salida fija con veinte desconocidos.

India Gate

El arco de 42 metros al final de Rajpath, grabado con los nombres de más de 13.000 soldados que murieron en la Primera Guerra Mundial y en la Tercera Guerra Anglo-Afgana. Lo diseñó Lutyens. Por las tardes, media Delhi viene aquí a comer helado en el césped.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Un paso en coche ante la residencia del presidente: 340 habitaciones, y una cúpula que Lutyens tomó del estupa de Sanchi. No se puede entrar sin un permiso reservado por adelantado, y cualquier tour que diga lo contrario te está engañando.

La tumba de Humayun

La importante. Construida en la década de 1560 por la viuda del emperador, es el primer gran mausoleo-jardín mogol de India y el antecesor arquitectónico directo del Taj Mahal: mismo trazado charbagh, misma doble cúpula, sesenta años antes. Declarada por la UNESCO, y una experiencia completamente distinta del Taj porque casi nunca está abarrotada.

Qutub Minar

Una torre de victoria de 73 metros comenzada en 1193, el minarete de ladrillo más alto del mundo, en un complejo construido con la piedra de veintisiete templos desmontados. En el patio está el pilar de hierro que lleva más de 1.600 años sin oxidarse, sobre el que los metalúrgicos siguen escribiendo artículos.
