El abuelo del Taj

Bega Begum encargó esto para su marido en 1565, nueve años después de su muerte, y contrató a un arquitecto persa para construirlo. Lo que surgió fue la primera gran tumba-jardín mogol de la India, y cada elemento por el que el Taj es famoso aparece aquí primero: la tumba colocada en el centro de un charbagh de cuatro partes dividido por canales de agua, la cúpula doble, la arenisca roja con incrustación de mármol blanco, la perfecta simetría bilateral.

El Taj se inició sesenta y siete años después. Estar aquí primero cambia cómo se lo ve.

El edificio

De planta octogonal, sobre una plataforma de casi siete metros de altura, con nichos arqueados en cada cara y una cúpula de mármol que fue la primera de su tipo en la India, una capa exterior para la silueta y una interior dimensionada para la cámara de abajo.

En su interior están la tumba de Humayun y, sorprendentemente, más de cien otras: esto se convirtió en la necrópolis dinástica, y príncipes, esposas y nobles mogoles fueron sepultados en las cámaras a su alrededor durante los dos siglos siguientes. A veces se le llama el dormitorio de los mogoles.

Aquí también fue capturado por los británicos en 1857 el último emperador, Bahadur Shah Zafar, tras haberse refugiado en la tumba de sus ancestros.

La restauración

El Aga Khan Trust for Culture pasó una década en este sitio a partir de 2007, retirando un millón de pies cúbicos de relleno de tierra posterior para recuperar los niveles originales del jardín, restaurando los canales de agua para que vuelvan a correr, y recolocando el pavimento de piedra. Generalmente se considera el mejor trabajo de conservación realizado en la India.

El museo del sitio, abierto en 2022 y en gran parte subterráneo, alberga hallazgos del complejo y está realmente bien hecho.
