Un solo monumento, bien explicado

Qutub Minar suele reducirse a veinte minutos en un circuito urbano. Merece dos horas, porque el complejo alrededor de la torre es donde realmente comienza la arquitectura islámica en la India, y porque el objeto más interesante no es el minarete.

La torre

Iniciada en 1193 por Qutb-ud-din Aibak, el primer sultán de Delhi, y terminada por sus sucesores: 73 metros de arenisca roja acanalada y mármol en cinco pisos cada vez más estrechos, cada uno con un balcón, cada uno en un estilo ligeramente distinto porque cada uno fue construido por un gobernante diferente.

Es el minarete de ladrillo más alto del mundo. Las bandas de inscripciones coránicas que lo recorren están talladas lo bastante profundo para leerse desde el suelo.

La escalera interior está cerrada desde 1981, tras una estampida. Nadie sube.

Mezquita Quwwat-ul-Islam

El complejo alrededor de la torre, y la parte donde un guía se gana su tarifa. Fue la primera mezquita construida en Delhi, y se ensambló con la piedra de veintisiete templos hindúes y jainistas desmantelados, lo cual no se oculta. Se puede ver el tallado original en las columnas, con rostros figurativos cincelados.

Eso lo convierte en un edificio incómodo y completamente fascinante: un plano enteramente islámico construido con piezas enteramente hindúes por artesanos que solo sabían tallar de una forma.

La columna de hierro

Siete metros de hierro forjado en el patio, hecho en el siglo IV bajo los emperadores gupta. Ha permanecido más de mil seiscientos años al aire libre y apenas se ha oxidado, debido a una capa rica en fósforo que se formó en su superficie. Los metalúrgicos todavía publican artículos sobre ella.

Alai Darwaza y el Alai Minar

La puerta de 1311 con sus arcos de herradura, y el tocón de una segunda torre que Alauddin Khalji inició y pretendía construir el doble de alta. Murió; se alza a 25 metros.
