La Vieja Delhi es la parte de la ciudad sobre la que más se advierte a los visitantes, y la que más se arrepienten de saltarse. Es densa, ruidosa, y los callejones no han cambiado de ancho desde que Shah Jahan los trazó. Recorrerla con una guía que sabe por dónde girar, y que es una mujer, cambia bastante la experiencia para muchos viajeros.

Adónde vas

El templo jainista en la parte alta de Chandni Chowk, el más antiguo de Delhi, que mantiene al lado un hospital de aves que trata miles de pájaros al año y no pide nada por ello.

Un gurdwara sij, donde la cocina del langar da de comer gratis a cualquiera que llegue, cada día, y donde serás bienvenido para ver cómo funciona.

Chandni Chowk en sí: el mercado de la plata, los callejones de boda de Kinari Bazaar, el mercado de especias de Khari Baoli, que es el mayor de Asia y te hará toser en cuanto subas a la azotea de encima.

Y la comida, elegida por alguien que come aquí: parathas del callejón que no hace otra cosa, jalebi de una tienda más antigua que la mayoría de los países, chaat, y kulfi.

Ven con hambre; hay más comida de la que la gente espera.
Tres horas caminando por callejones irregulares y concurridos. Calzado cómodo, y lleva el bolso por delante.
La mayor parte de Chandni Chowk cierra los domingos.
