Déroulé de la journée

Prise en charge à l'hôtel n'importe où dans Delhi. La Yamuna Expressway mène à Agra en environ trois heures en véhicule privé climatisé, et il vaut la peine de partir tôt : le Taj à sept heures est plus frais, moins fréquenté et bien mieux éclairé que le Taj à onze heures.

Au Taj Mahal, votre guide vous fait passer par l'approche de la Grande Porte, où le dôme apparaît d'abord encadré dans l'arche et où l'échelle se comprend enfin. Puis les jardins charbagh et le long bassin, la plate-forme de marbre, et l'intérieur du mausolée avec ses cénotaphes et ses écrans jali ajourés.

Le détail dont les gens se souviennent : la pietra dura, des pierres semi-précieuses taillées et serties à la main dans le marbre, avec du jaspe du Pendjab, du jade de Chine, de la turquoise du Tibet et du lapis d'Afghanistan. Et la calligraphie autour de la grande arche, agrandie à mesure qu'elle monte pour se lire uniformément depuis le sol.

Le fort d'Agra suit, où le Musamman Burj, la tour octogonale de marbre dans laquelle Shah Jahan fut enfermé par son fils Aurangzeb, regarde par-dessus la Yamuna le tombeau qu'il avait fait bâtir pour son épouse. C'est le fait de s'y tenir qui donne tout son poids au Taj.
