Les deux Delhi en une journée

Le Vieux Delhi et le Nouveau Delhi sont deux villes différentes qui partagent un nom. L'une est la capitale fortifiée de Shah Jahan de 1648, des ruelles de trois mètres de large, toujours commerçantes. L'autre est la trame impériale de Lutyens de 1931, des avenues de soixante mètres et des ronds-points nommés d'après des princes. Faire les deux en une journée est la seule façon de comprendre l'une ou l'autre.

Le Vieux Delhi

La Jama Masjid d'abord, la plus grande mosquée d'Inde, grès rouge et marbre blanc, avec une cour qui accueille vingt-cinq mille personnes. Épaules et genoux couverts ; des tuniques sont prêtées à l'entrée contre une petite somme. Les femmes devraient prendre un foulard.

Puis le cyclo-rickshaw à travers Chandni Chowk, la bonne et seule façon de parcourir cette rue. Marché aux épices, ruelle des argentiers, bazar des accessoires de mariage, et un conducteur qui se glisse dans des espaces qui n'existent pas.

Raj Ghat, la plate-forme de marbre noir où Gandhi a été incinéré en 1948, avec une flamme qui ne s'est pas éteinte depuis.

Le Nouveau Delhi

L'India Gate et le passage devant le Rashtrapati Bhavan sur Rajpath. La tombe de Humayun, le tombeau-jardin moghol des années 1560 sur lequel le Taj Mahal a été modelé soixante ans plus tard. Le Qutub Minar, 73 mètres de brique du XIIe siècle, avec le célèbre pilier de fer qui ne rouille pas dans sa cour.
