De Delhi au Gange et retour en une journée

Un vol matinal du nord vers l'est, environ quatre-vingt-dix minutes, puis une journée complète au sol avec voiture et guide, et le vol du soir pour rentrer. C'est la seule façon de voir Varanasi sans sacrifier deux jours de trajet.

Le bateau

Le cœur de l'expérience. Un bateau à rames le long des ghats, où toute la façade du fleuve se lit comme une seule paroi de pierre continue, telle qu'elle a été conçue pour être vue depuis l'eau. Les palais au-dessus des marches ont été construits par des maharajas venus de toute l'Inde, chacun voulant une maison sur ce fleuve.

À l'aube, la ville se tourne vers le soleil levant : des milliers de personnes se baignent, lavent leur linge, prient et pratiquent le yoga sur les marches en même temps. Le soir, des lampes partent sur l'eau dans de petites barques en feuilles.

Manikarnika se trouve sur ce tronçon. Ses feux de crémation brûlent sans interruption depuis des siècles, car les hindous considèrent que mourir à Varanasi met fin au cycle des réincarnations.

La photographie y est interdite. C'est absolu, et ce sont des funérailles.

Ganga Aarti

Au ghat de Dashashwamedh : des prêtres sur des plateformes surélevées avec des lampes de laiton à étages, des conques, des cloches et de l'encens, bougeant en parfaite unisson, devant des milliers de personnes sur les marches et dans des bateaux.

Sarnath

À dix kilomètres, où le Bouddha a prononcé son premier sermon après l'illumination. Le stupa de Dhamek marque l'endroit ; le musée abrite le chapiteau au lion d'Ashoka, l'original de l'emblème figurant sur chaque billet et passeport indien.

Kashi Vishwanath

Un des douze jyotirlinga, au cœur de la vieille ville. La sécurité est stricte, ni téléphones ni sacs, et les ruelles alentour sont trop étroites pour tout véhicule.
