Commencez votre visite à Bara Darwaza, la majestueuse porte principale construite en grès rouge et quartzite gris. Cette porte du 16e siècle existe depuis l'époque de Sher Shah Suri, et sert encore aujourd'hui d'entrée principale. Remarquez les balcons en arcade, les chhatris à dôme, et l'immensité du site : une véritable démonstration de pouvoir et de contrôle.

Entrez directement et dirigez-vous vers la mosquée Qila-i-Kuhna, un superbe exemple d'architecture indo-islamique construite en 1541 par Sher Shah Suri. Admirez les cinq entrées en arc, la calligraphie complexe, et le mihrab (niche de prière) en marbre rouge, blanc, et noir.

Ensuite, dirigez-vous vers le Sher Mandal, une tour octogonale de deux étages qui se dresse aujourd'hui partiellement isolée. On pense qu'elle fut commencée par Sher Shah, puis utilisée plus tard par l'empereur Humayun comme bibliothèque et observatoire. C'est également l'endroit tragique où Humayun trouva la mort en 1556, en chutant dans les escaliers après une prière.

Dirigez-vous vers le côté est du fort pour marcher le long des remparts. De là, vous bénéficiez d'une superbe vue sur la porte de Humayun, la porte arrière faisant face à la direction de la tombe de Humayun. Profitez également des vues sur les douves (aujourd'hui asséchées), autrefois remplies d'eau provenant de la rivière Yamuna voisine, qui coulait autrefois juste à côté du fort.

Près de la mosquée, vous verrez des zones clôturées où des fouilles archéologiques ont révélé des strates du passé de Delhi, de l'époque maurya (IIIe siècle av. J.-C.) aux périodes moghole. Certains tessons de poterie et artefacts trouvés ici sont préservés dans le musée du Purana Qila sur place (un petit arrêt qui vaut la peine s'il est ouvert).

Sortez de la zone du monument et marchez jusqu'au lac juste à l'extérieur des murs du fort. Le pédalo ici vous offre une superbe vue sur la structure massive du fort se reflétant dans l'eau, une fin sereine à votre promenade historique.
