L'autre nord de l'Inde

Pas de forts du Rajasthan ni de Taj sur cet itinéraire. Il part plutôt vers l'est, dans l'Uttar Pradesh : la plus ancienne ville habitée d'Inde, la ville au temple le plus contesté du pays, et la dernière grande ville de cour des États successeurs moghols.

Varanasi

Vol depuis Delhi. La ville revendique trois mille ans d'habitation continue, et cela se voit.

Un bateau à l'aube le long des ghats est l'expérience centrale, toute la façade du fleuve se tourne vers le soleil levant tandis que des milliers de personnes se baignent, se lavent et prient sur les marches. Le soir, la Ganga Aarti à Dashashwamedh, exécutée avec des lampes à étages et des cloches par des prêtres bougeant en unisson.

Les ghats de crémation à Manikarnika et Harishchandra brûlent sans interruption, car les hindous considèrent que mourir ici met fin au cycle des réincarnations. Aucune photographie là-bas, c'est absolu.

Sarnath, à onze kilomètres, est l'endroit où Bouddha a prononcé son premier sermon après l'illumination. Le stupa de Dhamek et le musée avec le chapiteau au lion d'Ashoka, l'original de l'emblème national de l'Inde, se trouvent tous deux ici.

Ayodhya

Considérée par les hindous comme le lieu de naissance de Rama. Le Ram Mandir, consacré en janvier 2024 sur le site le plus disputé de l'histoire indienne moderne, est aujourd'hui parmi les lieux les plus visités du pays.

Également sur place : Hanuman Garhi, en haut de soixante-seize marches et plus fréquenté que tout le reste de la ville, et les ghats le long de la rivière Sarayu où l'aarti du soir est plus modeste et plus douce que celle de Varanasi.

La sécurité au Ram Mandir est extrêmement stricte, ni téléphones, ni sacs, ni électronique. Attendez-vous à des files.

Lucknow

La capitale de l'Awadh, et un registre complètement différent : courtois, sans hâte, et célèbre pour ses manières.

Le Bara Imambara avec son Bhul Bhulaiya, un labyrinthe de 489 portes identiques dans les murs au-dessus du hall, il faut vraiment le guide. Le Chota Imambara, le Rumi Darwaza, et la Résidence en ruine, toujours marquée par le siège de 1857.

Et la cuisine : le kebab galouti, inventé pour un nawab édenté, et le biryani Awadhi.
