Quatre-vingt-dix minutes, et un temple à l'histoire particulière

Le temple Lakshminarayan, tout le monde l'appelle Birla Mandir, a été construit par la famille industrielle Birla entre 1933 et 1939, et il a été inauguré par le Mahatma Gandhi à une condition : que les personnes de toutes les castes y soient admises.

En 1939, ce n'était pas un détail. L'accès aux temples pour les dalits était l'un des combats centraux de l'époque, et la condition de Gandhi a fait de ce bâtiment une déclaration plutôt qu'un simple don.

C'est la raison d'y passer une heure et demie plutôt que de le photographier depuis la route.

Le temple

Dédié à Lakshminarayan, Vishnou avec sa parèdre Lakshmi. Trois étages de grès crème et ocre rouge de style Nagara, avec de hauts shikharas incurvés et énormément de sculptures, construits sur 6,27 acres.

Des sanctuaires annexes honorent Shiva, Durga, Krishna, Hanuman, Ganesh et le Shiv Parivar.

Le Sheesh Mahal et le Geeta Bhawan servent aux discours plutôt qu'au culte, et les jardins derrière abritent des fontaines et des scènes sculptées, dont un ensemble assez saisissant sur la mythologie hindoue que les enfants apprécient.

L'architecte était Sris Chandra Chatterjee, travaillant dans un style indien délibérément revivaliste à un moment où la plupart des constructions publiques de Delhi étaient réalisées par les Britanniques dans un tout autre style.

Ce qui est attendu

Chaussures retirées au comptoir, gratuit et surveillé. Épaules et genoux couverts. Aucune photographie à l'intérieur des sanctuaires, et les articles en cuir, ceintures, sacs, portefeuilles bordés de cuir, doivent rester dans la voiture.

C'est un temple actif, donc il y aura des aarti en cours. Vous pouvez vous asseoir à l'arrière aussi longtemps que vous le souhaitez.
