La tour qui a fondé le Delhi islamique, et un pilier que personne n'explique.

Le Qutub Minar fait 72,5 mètres de grès rouge cannelé et de marbre, commencé en 1192 par Qutb-ud-din Aibak et achevé par ses successeurs au cours des 180 années suivantes, ce qui explique le changement de style à mesure qu'il s'élève. C'est le plus haut minaret de brique du monde et le plus ancien site UNESCO de Delhi. On ne peut pas y monter : l'accès a été fermé après une bousculade en 1981 et n'a jamais rouvert.

Le complexe autour est la vraie substance. Quwwat-ul-Islam, la plus ancienne mosquée subsistante du nord de l'Inde, bâtie avec la pierre de temples démolis, où la sculpture hindoue reste visible sur des colonnes réemployées plutôt que retaillées. L'Alai Darwaza, la porte de 1311 qui compte parmi les premières véritables coupoles construites en Inde. Et l'Alai Minar inachevé, conçu pour être deux fois plus haut que le Qutub, abandonné à 24 mètres à la mort de son commanditaire.

Puis le pilier de fer. Sept mètres, plus de six tonnes, coulé vers le IVe siècle, dressé en plein air dans le climat de Delhi depuis plus de 1 600 ans sans presque aucune rouille. L'explication tient à une teneur élevée en phosphore qui forme un film protecteur, et il reste l'objet le plus cité de l'histoire de la métallurgie indienne.

Ouvert tous les jours, du lever au coucher du soleil.
L'entrée est de 600 ₹ pour les ressortissants étrangers ; les ressortissants indiens paient 40 ₹.
Le transport n'est pas inclus dans l'option de base. Le site est sur la ligne jaune, station Qutub Minar, à environ quinze minutes à pied ou un court trajet en auto-rickshaw depuis la station.
On ne peut ni entrer dans le minaret ni y monter, et on ne peut pas toucher le pilier de fer, désormais clôturé.
Le parc archéologique de Mehrauli est juste à côté, avec une douzaine d'autres tombeaux et puits à degrés, presque toujours vides, si vous avez une heure de plus.
