Le siège du pouvoir moghol pendant deux cents ans.

Shah Jahan a bâti le fort Rouge à partir de 1639, quand il a déplacé la capitale d'Agra vers sa nouvelle ville de Shahjahanabad. Il a gouverné l'empire jusqu'en 1857, et c'est encore de là que le Premier ministre parle le jour de l'Indépendance. Les murs courent sur deux kilomètres en grès rouge, d'où vient le nom.

Par la porte de Lahore puis le long du Chatta Chowk, le bazar couvert où la cour achetait autrefois soie et bijoux et qui vend encore aujourd'hui aux visiteurs. Le Diwan-i-Am, la salle d'audience publique, où l'empereur écoutait les requêtes de quiconque se présentait. Le Diwan-i-Khas au-delà, qui abritait le trône du Paon, avec l'inscription qui dit toujours que s'il existe un paradis sur terre, il est ici. Les Rang Mahal et Khas Mahal de marbre côté fleuve, et le Hammam, les bains royaux.

Le fort Rouge est fermé le lundi.
