Le monument le mieux restauré d'Inde

Le tombeau de Humayun mérite une visite guidée autant pour l'histoire de sa conservation que pour son architecture. L'Aga Khan Trust for Culture y a travaillé pendant une décennie à partir de 2007 : ils ont retiré environ un million de pieds cubes de terre que des occupants ultérieurs avaient déversée sur le jardin, retrouvé les niveaux d'origine, reconstruit les canaux d'eau pour qu'ils coulent à nouveau, et reposé la pierre à la main.

Avant cela, c'était une ruine agréable dans une pelouse. Aujourd'hui, c'est proche de ce que Bega Begum a commandé.

Pourquoi c'est important

Elle l'a construit pour son époux en 1565, neuf ans après sa mort, et a fait venir un architecte persan pour cela. Le résultat fut le premier grand tombeau-jardin moghol d'Inde, et il a établi toutes les conventions que le Taj Mahal a suivies soixante-sept ans plus tard, le tombeau au centre d'un charbagh en quatre parties divisé par des canaux d'eau, le double dôme, le grès rouge avec incrustation de marbre blanc, et une symétrie poussée au millimètre.

À l'intérieur

Une chambre octogonale sur une plateforme de presque sept mètres de haut. Humayun est enterré ici, ainsi que plus de cent autres Moghols, princes, épouses, nobles, inhumés dans les chambres annexes au cours des deux siècles suivants. On l'appelle parfois le dormitoire des Moghols.

En 1857, le dernier empereur, Bahadur Shah Zafar, se réfugia dans ce tombeau et y fut capturé par les Britanniques.

Le reste du complexe

Le tombeau d'Isa Khan, vingt ans plus ancien, avec sa propre enceinte octogonale et sa mosquée, et généralement complètement vide. Le tombeau du Barbier dans le jardin principal, dont nul n'a identifié l'occupant. Et le Nila Gumbad, le tombeau au dôme bleu hors du mur est, récupéré sur un terrain ferroviaire lors de la même restauration.
