Varanasi vaut le trajet

La route depuis Delhi est longue, environ 800 km, une journée complète en voiture privée climatisée avec des arrêts. La plupart des gens prennent l'avion ou le train, et ceci s'adresse aux voyageurs qui préfèrent garder leur propre véhicule et s'arrêter où ils le souhaitent sur la Grand Trunk Road.

Il y a une pause dans un vrai dhaba de route au passage : aloo paratha au beurre, et un verre de lassi assez épais pour y tenir une cuillère debout.

Le soir de votre arrivée

Installation sur les rives du fleuve, les propriétés patrimoniales sur les ghats vous placent à l'intérieur de la vieille ville plutôt qu'à un trajet de taxi.

Puis un bateau de nuit sur le Gange, la bonne introduction. La ville est illuminée, les plateformes d'aarti se préparent, et toute la façade du fleuve se lit comme une seule paroi de pierre continue depuis l'eau, telle qu'elle a été conçue pour être vue.

La Ganga Aarti au ghat de Dashashwamedh ensuite : des prêtres en parfaite unisson avec des lampes de laiton à étages, des cloches, des conques et de l'encens, devant une foule de milliers de personnes sur les marches et dans des bateaux.

L'aube

La raison d'être ici. Un bateau à la première lumière, remontant le long des ghats tandis que toute la façade du fleuve se tourne vers le soleil levant, des milliers de personnes se baignant, se lavant, priant, faisant leur lessive, pratiquant le yoga sur les marches, tout en même temps.

Manikarnika et Harishchandra sont les ghats de crémation, et leurs feux ne se sont pas éteints depuis des siècles. Les hindous considèrent que mourir à Varanasi met fin au cycle des réincarnations, c'est pourquoi des corps arrivent ici de toute l'Inde.

La photographie aux ghats de crémation est interdite. Ce n'est pas une règle souple, et votre guide vous dira où se situe la limite. Respectez-la absolument.

La vieille ville

Des ruelles trop étroites pour les voitures, le temple de Kashi Vishwanath, des ateliers de tisserands de soie, et du kachori-sabzi debout au petit-déjeuner.
