Le bateau

Un bateau à rames le long des ghats. Depuis l'eau, toute la façade du fleuve se lit comme une seule paroi de pierre continue, telle qu'elle a été conçue pour être vue, les palais au-dessus des marches ont été construits par des maharajas de toute l'Inde qui voulaient une maison sur ce fleuve.

Au crépuscule, des lampes partent sur l'eau dans de petites barques en feuilles, par centaines, et les ghats se remplissent.

Manikarnika, le principal site de crémation, se trouve sur ce tronçon. Ses feux brûlent sans interruption depuis des siècles, car les hindous considèrent que mourir à Varanasi met fin au cycle des réincarnations, et des corps arrivent ici de toute l'Inde.

La photographie y est interdite. C'est absolu, votre guide vous indiquera exactement où se situe la limite, et vous devez la respecter sans discussion, ce sont des funérailles.

Ganga Aarti à Dashashwamedh

Exécutée chaque soir au ghat principal : sept prêtres sur des plateformes surélevées, des lampes de laiton à étages, des conques, des cloches, de l'encens et des tambours, bougeant en parfaite unisson pendant environ quarante-cinq minutes.

Des milliers de personnes regardent depuis les marches et depuis des bateaux. C'est bruyant, formel, et totalement captivant, et cela se fait sous une forme ou une autre depuis très longtemps.

Un bateau offre la meilleure place si vous pouvez en avoir un, vous observez les prêtres avec la ville derrière eux plutôt que le dos de la foule.

Local, ce qui compte ici plus que partout ailleurs : les ruelles derrière les ghats ne sont pas signalées, non cartographiées et trop étroites pour un véhicule, et retrouver son chemin seul de nuit est réellement difficile.
