Plus calme que le Taj, et la même idée soixante ans plus tôt

Le tombeau de Humayun reçoit une fraction des visiteurs du Taj Mahal, et c'est le bâtiment dont le Taj est issu. Si vous avez un après-midi à Delhi et un seul monument en vous, c'est celui-ci.

La commande

Bega Begum l'a construit pour son époux en 1565, neuf ans après sa mort, et a fait venir un architecte persan, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, pour le concevoir. On dit qu'elle a consacré le reste de sa vie au projet.

Le résultat fut le premier grand tombeau-jardin moghol d'Inde : le tombeau au centre d'un charbagh en quatre parties divisé par des canaux d'eau, sous un double dôme, en grès rouge avec incrustation de marbre blanc, symétrique au millimètre.

Chacun de ces éléments reparaît au Taj en 1632, à plus grande échelle et en marbre blanc. La filiation est directe.

À l'intérieur

Une chambre octogonale sur une plateforme de presque sept mètres de haut, avec des renfoncements en arc sur chaque face.

Humayun y est enterré, ainsi que plus de cent autres Moghols, princes, épouses et nobles inhumés dans les chambres annexes au cours des deux siècles suivants, c'est pourquoi on l'appelle parfois le dormitoire des Moghols.

Le dernier empereur, Bahadur Shah Zafar, s'est caché dans ce tombeau en 1857 et y a été capturé.

Le jardin

L'Aga Khan Trust for Culture l'a restauré sur une décennie à partir de 2007, retirant environ un million de pieds cubes de terre déposée ultérieurement pour retrouver les niveaux d'origine et reconstruisant les canaux d'eau pour qu'ils fonctionnent. C'est le meilleur travail de conservation du pays.

Arrivez tôt et les canaux auront de l'eau, la lumière descendant directement le long de l'axe.

Également digne d'une visite

Le tombeau d'Isa Khan à l'intérieur du complexe, vingt ans plus ancien que celui de Humayun, avec sa propre enceinte et sa mosquée, et presque toujours vide.
