Deux villes avec un seul nom

Le vieux Delhi est la capitale fortifiée de Shah Jahan de 1648, des ruelles de trois mètres de large, toujours commerçantes. Le nouveau Delhi est la grille impériale de Lutyens de 1931, des avenues de soixante mètres de large et des ronds-points nommés d'après des princes. Ils sont séparés de huit kilomètres et de trois cents ans, et cette visite vous permet de choisir l'un ou de prendre les deux.

Le vieux Delhi

La Jama Masjid, achevée en 1656 et toujours la plus grande mosquée d'Inde : grès rouge et marbre blanc autour d'une cour qui accueille vingt-cinq mille personnes. Épaules et genoux couverts ; des robes sont prêtées à la porte pour un petit supplément.

Chandni Chowk, mieux en cyclo-pousse, la seule façon sensée de parcourir cette rue. Tracée dans les années 1650 par Jahanara, la fille de Shah Jahan, avec un canal au centre qui reflétait le clair de lune, et toujours organisée commerce par commerce, l'argent à Dariba Kalan, les garnitures de mariage au Kinari Bazaar, et Khari Baoli, le plus grand marché aux épices d'Asie.

Le Raj Ghat, la plateforme de marbre noir où Gandhi fut incinéré en 1948, avec une flamme qui ne s'est pas éteinte depuis.

Le nouveau Delhi

India Gate et le trajet le long du Rajpath devant le Rashtrapati Bhavan, 340 pièces sous un dôme que Lutyens a emprunté à un stupa bouddhiste.

Le tombeau de Humayun, construit dans les années 1560 par la veuve de l'empereur : le premier grand tombeau-jardin moghol d'Inde, et le modèle direct du Taj soixante ans plus tard.

Qutub Minar, commencé en 1193, le plus haut minaret en brique du monde, dressé dans un complexe construit avec la pierre de vingt-sept temples démantelés, avec le pilier de fer qui n'a pas rouillé en seize cents ans.
