New Delhi en un après-midi

New Delhi n'est pas une ville où l'on marche. Il y a 17 km entre l'India Gate et le Qutub Minar, et entre les deux se trouvent un tombeau, un temple et la résidence d'un président. Une voiture avec un guide pendant cinq heures est la seule façon raisonnable de les voir d'un coup, et c'est exactement cela : pas d'autocar, pas de départ fixe avec vingt inconnus.

India Gate

L'arc de 42 mètres au bout de Rajpath, gravé des noms de plus de 13 000 soldats morts pendant la Première Guerre mondiale et la troisième guerre anglo-afghane. Lutyens l'a dessiné. Le soir, la moitié de Delhi vient y manger des glaces sur les pelouses.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Un passage devant la résidence du président : 340 pièces, et un dôme que Lutyens a emprunté au stupa de Sanchi. On ne peut pas entrer sans un permis réservé à l'avance, et toute visite qui prétend le contraire vous induit en erreur.

La tombe de Humayun

L'importante. Bâtie dans les années 1560 par la veuve de l'empereur, c'est le premier grand tombeau-jardin moghol d'Inde et l'ancêtre architectural direct du Taj Mahal : même plan charbagh, même double coupole, soixante ans plus tôt. Classée à l'UNESCO, et une expérience complètement différente du Taj parce qu'elle est rarement bondée.

Qutub Minar

Une tour de victoire de 73 mètres commencée en 1193, le plus haut minaret de brique du monde, dans un complexe bâti avec la pierre de vingt-sept temples démontés. Dans la cour se trouve le pilier de fer qui tient depuis plus de 1 600 ans sans rouiller, sujet sur lequel les métallurgistes écrivent encore des articles.

Sans les billets d'entrée, ou avec. La tombe de Humayun et le Qutub Minar coûtent 600 ₹ chacun pour les ressortissants étrangers : la version avec billets vaut donc le calcul si vous comptez entrer dans les deux.
