Le grand-père du Taj

Bega Begum commanda ceci pour son époux en 1565, neuf ans après sa mort, et engagea un architecte persan pour le construire. Le résultat fut le premier grand tombeau-jardin moghol d'Inde, et chaque élément pour lequel le Taj est célèbre apparaît ici en premier : le tombeau placé au centre d'un charbagh en quatre parties divisé par des canaux d'eau, le double dôme, le grès rouge avec incrustation de marbre blanc, la symétrie bilatérale parfaite.

Le Taj a été commencé soixante-sept ans plus tard. Se tenir ici d'abord change la façon de le voir.

Le bâtiment

De plan octogonal, sur une plateforme de presque sept mètres de haut, avec des renfoncements en arc sur chaque face et un dôme de marbre qui fut le premier de son genre en Inde, une coque extérieure pour la silhouette et une intérieure dimensionnée pour la chambre en dessous.

À l'intérieur se trouvent la tombe de Humayun et, chose remarquable, plus de cent autres : ce lieu devint la nécropole dynastique, et des princes, épouses et nobles moghols furent enterrés dans les chambres autour de lui au cours des deux siècles suivants. On l'appelle parfois le dormitoire des Moghols.

C'est aussi là que le dernier empereur, Bahadur Shah Zafar, fut capturé par les Britanniques en 1857, après s'être réfugié au tombeau de ses ancêtres.

La restauration

L'Aga Khan Trust for Culture a passé une décennie sur ce site à partir de 2007, retirant un million de pieds cubes de terre déposée ultérieurement pour retrouver les niveaux d'origine du jardin, restaurant les canaux d'eau pour qu'ils fonctionnent à nouveau, et reposant le pavage de pierre. C'est généralement considéré comme le meilleur travail de conservation réalisé en Inde.

Le musée du site, ouvert en 2022 et largement souterrain, abrite des découvertes du complexe et est réellement bien conçu.

Le tombeau d'Isa Khan, vingt ans plus ancien que celui de Humayun et avec sa propre enceinte et mosquée, et le tombeau du Barbier dans le jardin principal, personne ne sait vraiment à qui il appartient.
