Exploring Jama Masjid: The Heart of Old Delhi
Your first stop is the majestic Jama Masjid, officially known as Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa. Built between 1644 and 1656 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, this mosque is one of the largest in India and a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. As you stand in the sprawling courtyard, imagine the imperial processions and religious gatherings that once animated this space. This private tour of Old and New Delhi was incredible. We chose the full day option and it was worth every minute. Started in Old Delhi at the Red Fort, then walked through the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk to Jama Masjid. After lunch we switched to New Delhi with India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the Lotus Temple. Having a private guide meant we could spend extra time at sites we loved. The contrast between the two halves of Delhi is absolutley fascinating.
Chose the half day option focusing on Old Delhi and it was brilliant. The guide took us through the spice market in Chandni Chowk where the aromas were unbelievable. We visited Jama Masjid and climbed the minaret for panoramic views over the old city. Then a cycle rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes which was both terrifying and exhilarating. The guide knew all the hidden gems, from tiny sweet shops to a 200 year old haveli that most tourists never see. Highly reccomend.
Booked the full day private tour for my parents visiting from Bangalore who had never properly explored Delhi. The guide was excellent and covered both Old and New Delhi comprehensively. Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk in the morning, then Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar and India Gate in the afternoon. One small issue was the car was a bit cramped for four people. Otherwise a really thorough and well paced tour of India's capital.
The private half day tour was perfect for us. We focused on New Delhi and visited Humayun's Tomb, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Qutub Minar. Having a private guide meant we could ask endless questions about Mughal architecture and the British colonial period. The guide was incredibly well read and could answer everything we threw at him. The flexibility of a private tour is definately worth the extra cost compared to group options.
We did the full day private tour and the guide did an amazing job weaving together the story of Delhi across centuries. From the Mughal era Red Fort to the British era Connaught Place to modern Delhi, every stop told a different chapter. The rickshaw ride through Old Delhi and the street food tasting were highlights. We tried gol gappe, jalebi and the famous butter chicken at a hole in the wall restaurant. The private car was comfortable and the driver was patient. Best tour we did in India.
