Un seul monument, correctement expliqué

Qutub Minar se réduit habituellement à vingt minutes dans un circuit de ville. Il mérite deux heures, car le complexe autour de la tour est là où l'architecture islamique en Inde commence réellement, et parce que l'objet le plus intéressant n'est pas le minaret.

La tour

Commencée en 1193 par Qutb-ud-din Aibak, le premier sultan de Delhi, et achevée par ses successeurs : 73 mètres de grès rouge cannelé et de marbre en cinq étages effilés, chacun avec un balcon, chacun dans un style légèrement différent car chacun a été construit par un souverain différent.

C'est le plus haut minaret en brique du monde. Les bandes d'inscriptions coraniques qui le parcourent sont taillées assez profondément pour se lire depuis le sol.

L'escalier intérieur est fermé depuis 1981, après une bousculade. Personne n'y monte.

Mosquée Quwwat-ul-Islam

Le complexe autour de la tour, et la partie où un guide gagne vraiment son salaire. Ce fut la première mosquée construite à Delhi, et elle fut assemblée avec la pierre de vingt-sept temples hindous et jaïns démantelés, ce qui n'est pas caché. Vous pouvez voir la sculpture d'origine sur les colonnes, avec les visages figuratifs burinés.

Cela en fait un bâtiment inconfortable et complètement fascinant : un plan entièrement islamique construit à partir de pièces entièrement hindoues par des artisans qui ne savaient sculpter que d'une seule façon.

Le pilier de fer

Sept mètres de fer forgé se dressant dans la cour, fabriqué au IVe siècle sous les empereurs Gupta. Il se dresse depuis plus de seize cents ans à l'air libre et n'a presque pas rouillé, en raison d'un film riche en phosphore qui s'est formé à sa surface. Les métallurgistes publient encore des articles sur le sujet.

Alai Darwaza et l'Alai Minar

La porte de 1311 avec ses arcs en fer à cheval, et le moignon d'une seconde tour qu'Alauddin Khalji a commencée et voulait construire deux fois plus haute. Il est mort ; elle s'élève à 25 mètres.
