Full description

Picked up anywhere in the NCR

Delhi airport, Gurugram, Noida, or anywhere else in the National Capital Region — which matters more than it sounds, because a great many visitors are staying in Gurugram for work and every standard tour assumes a central Delhi hotel.

Chauffeur-driven, down the Yamuna Expressway, about three and a half hours.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan commissioned it in 1631, the year Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child, and it took twenty-two years. Twenty thousand workers are recorded in the imperial accounts — masons, inlayers, dome builders, calligraphers — with their wages, which is why so much is known about how it was made.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so it reads uniformly from the ground; the pietra dura, up to sixty stones in one inlaid flower; the four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and the one deliberate asymmetry, Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort

A walled city rather than a fort: two and a half kilometres of red sandstone begun by Akbar in 1565, with a double moat and an entrance gate angled so war elephants could not charge it straight.

Inside, Shah Jahan's marble replacements — the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal — and the Musamman Burj, the tower where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for eight years within sight of the Taj.

Five options

An Agra-start guide only; Agra with car and monument tickets; from Delhi with car and guide; from Delhi with car, guide, tickets and a five-star meal; or from Delhi with car, guide and tickets.

Practical

Around nine hours in Agra plus the road each way.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Entry is ₹1,300 a head for a foreign adult with the mausoleum, ₹650 at the fort.

Riyaz is a great tour guide, very kind and willing to customize your experience as much as possible based on your interests and needs. It felt like going around with a friend, plus, of course, receiving very detailed historic information. The cherry on top of the cake is his great ideas of pictures within the Taj Mahal area and managing to make sure other people are not on it. He also found a safe place for me to store my laptop during Taj Mahal's visit and suggested a place where I could go to use the internet while waiting for my train. The only downside was the internet connection at Costa's café (not his fault at all). I'm sure he would have another suggestion if he knew there were issues there. I totally recommend his tour, I was alone as a woman and felt very safe and comfortable.

Visiting the Taj Mahal was an unforgettable experience. is truly one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen in my life — even more impressive than the architecture in Dubai. The elegance, symmetry, and atmosphere of this place create something almost unreal. Photos don’t fully capture how stunning it is in person. The whole trip was well organized, and what made it even better was our guide, Ali. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. He explained the history and details in a very engaging way, making the visit much more meaningful and interesting. You could tell he really cared about giving us the best experience possible. Overall, it was an amazing journey that I will remember for a long time. I highly recommend visiting the Taj Mahal, especially with such a professional and passionate guide.

My tour in Taj Mahal and Agra Fort was an unforgettable experience. The Taj Mahal is truly breathtaking, with its stunning white marble architecture and peaceful surroundings. Agra Fort is equally impressive, showcasing rich history and beautiful Mughal design. Everything was well-organized, and I really enjoyed learning about the history behind these iconic monuments. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Agra!
