From Delhi: Taj Mahal and Agra Day Tour by Super-fast Train

The train version of the Agra day trip removes the thing that makes the road version hard: seven to eight hours in a car. Reserved AC chair-car seats, breakfast served as you travel, and Agra in a little over ninety minutes.

06:30 — Delhi

Pickup from your hotel in Delhi, Gurugram or Noida, and a private air-conditioned transfer to Nizamuddin station, with help boarding.

08:00 — the train

Gatimaan or an equivalent superfast service, reserved coach, catering included.

In Agra

A private car and a licensed local guide take over for the day.

Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan began it in 1632 for Mumtaz Mahal, who died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, white marble carted 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

What a guide adds: the calligraphy cut larger as it rises so the letters read evenly from the ground; the pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones; the four minarets, tilted slightly outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; the optical trick at the gateway where the Taj appears to shrink as you approach; and the one break in the symmetry — Shah Jahan's cenotaph, set off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort. Two kilometres upriver: Akbar's red sandstone walls of 1565, Shah Jahan's marble palaces within, and the Musamman Burj where he spent his last eight years imprisoned by his own son, looking at his wife's tomb.

Lunch, then the evening train back into Delhi.

Guide only in Agra; car, driver and guide in Agra; or the full day with second-class chair car or first-class executive travel, lunch and all entry tickets.

Practical

Around ten hours door to door. Trains do not run to Agra on this service on Fridays, which is also the day the Taj is closed.
