From Delhi: Agra Sunrise Yoga Class with Taj Mahal Tour

Start on a mat, finish at the Taj

This is a long day out of Delhi with an unusual first hour: a yoga session at sunrise in Agra, before the sightseeing begins. It works better than it sounds, because the drive down happens while you are half asleep anyway, and arriving at the Taj having already stretched out four hours in a car changes the visit.

The drive

Early pickup from Delhi, then the Yamuna Expressway — around three and a half hours in a private air-conditioned car.

Yoga at sunrise

A guided session pitched at all levels: breathing, gentle stretching, basic postures. No experience needed and nothing acrobatic. Mats are provided.

India is where this practice comes from, and doing it outdoors at first light in Agra is a different thing from doing it in a studio at home.

Taj Mahal

Then the monument in the morning light, with a licensed guide. Shah Jahan's tomb for Mumtaz Mahal, begun 1632, twenty-two years in the building.

The details worth having someone point out: calligraphy sized to read uniformly from the ground, pietra dura inlay of dozens of stones per flower, minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them away from the dome, and the deliberate asymmetry of Shah Jahan's own cenotaph.

Agra Fort

Akbar's fort of 1565 in red sandstone, with the marble palaces his grandson added — and the Musamman Burj, the tower where that grandson was imprisoned by his own son, looking down the river at the Taj.

Practical

Twelve hours door to door. The Taj is closed on Fridays.

Wear something you can move in for the first hour; there is time to change before the sightseeing.

Two options: car and guide, or the version with entry tickets included. Entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,300 at the Taj with the mausoleum, ₹650 at the fort.
