Where the marble came from

Every description of the Taj mentions white marble. Fewer mention that it came from Makrana, 400 km away in Rajasthan, and that the quarries are still working — you can buy Makrana marble in Jaipur today, and it is the same stone.

What makes it unusual is its calcite purity, which is why it is translucent to about a centimetre and why the building appears to change colour rather than simply catch light. A thousand elephants and ox carts moved it, on a ramp built for the purpose.

That single fact reframes the whole thing: it is not a building that was decorated, it is a building assembled out of one extraordinary material.

The day

Pickup from your hotel lobby in Delhi, then the Yamuna Expressway — about three hours. Your guide meets you in Agra.

Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan commissioned it in 1631, the year Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years of work, and the imperial records list the workforce — masons, inlayers, calligraphers, dome builders — with wages, which is why we know so much about how it was built.

Your guide will show you the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground; the pietra dura inlay of dozens of stones per flower; the four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and the one deliberate asymmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-axis by his son.
