The garden is half the building
The Taj sits at the far end of a charbagh — a four-part Persian garden divided by water channels, an image of paradise with four rivers running from a central source. What is unusual is that the tomb is not in the middle of it.
Every earlier Mughal garden tomb, including Humayun's in Delhi, puts the building at the centre. Shah Jahan moved it to the end, against the river, so that the Taj is seen across the full length of the water and against sky rather than trees.
That single decision is why the photographs work. And the garden was planted with fruit trees and dense shrubs until the British cleared it to lawn in the 1890s — the view you have now is a Victorian one.
The day
Pickup from anywhere in Delhi, Gurugram or Noida, then the expressway in an air-conditioned car with a private driver and guide.
Taj Mahal. Begun 1632, twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble hauled 400 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.
The calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads the same height from the ground. The pietra dura inlay, up to sixty stones in one flower. The four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb. And Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, the only object in the building placed off the central axis.
Agra Fort. Akbar's walled city of 1565 in red sandstone, with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside and the Musamman Burj where he died a prisoner of his own son, looking downriver at his wife's tomb.

We spent a very good time visiting the Taj Mahal with this tour. A driver came to take us at our hotel, in Delhi, and drive us directly to Taj Mahal. He was very sympathic, and drove very safely, which is pretty rare in Delhi. We really felt in security during the whole trip by car. We met our guide by arriving in Agra, and we had the good surprise to discover that he spoke french, which was very appreciated. He explained us everything about Taj Mahal, and took very good pictures of us. We went then to a nice and modern restaurant, which serves typical indian food. After that, the guide proposed to take us to cashemire store, but we preferred to discover a marble factory, and a jewelry that proposes jewels with indian precious stones. We recommend this tour to have an effective but complete journey to Agra and Taj Mahal.
Both our driver Vishnu and our guide Adil was very heplful and flexible. They both told a lot of interesting facto. The tour was incredible, and really worth to attend. I recommend very much!

The tour was amazing. The driver was completely on time for the pickup and he came directly to my hotel. Driving felt safe and comfortable. Also we took a rest to get some te and food. My guide Kashif received me in Agra, with everything prepared. His explanations were clear and interesting, and he was able to speak Spanish pretty well. Also they offered me two different options for having lunch, and I was able to enjoy a great indian food. Overall an great experience, 100% recommended!
