The morning

Early pickup from anywhere in Delhi NCR, then Hazrat Nizamuddin station for the Gatimaan Express — India's fastest train, 160 km/h, Delhi to Agra in a hundred minutes with breakfast served at your seat.

Agra

A private air-conditioned car and licensed guide meet you at Agra Cantt.

Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble from Makrana 300 km away.

What a guide gives you: the calligraphy on the great arch, cut in progressively larger letters so it appears the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where a single flower can hold sixty stones; the four minarets, leaning fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; the illusion at the gateway, where the building seems to shrink as you walk toward it; and the one deliberate asymmetry — Shah Jahan's cenotaph, placed off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort. Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565, with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside: the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal, and the Musamman Burj, where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years with the Taj visible along the river.

About ten hours door to door. The Gatimaan does not run on Fridays, which is also when the Taj is closed.
