From Delhi: Private Layover Taj Mahal Day Tour By Car in Agra

Built for a long layover

If you have ten hours between flights at Delhi airport, this is what to do with them. Pickup at the terminal, the expressway to Agra, the Taj and the fort, and back to departures.

It is tight and it works, and there are two things to be honest about before you book.

The arithmetic

Delhi airport to Agra is three to three and a half hours each way in good conditions. That leaves about three hours on the ground, which covers the Taj properly and Agra Fort briskly.

You need a minimum of ten hours between landing and your next check-in, and twelve is comfortable. Anything less and you should not attempt it.

You also need to be able to leave the airport, which means clearing immigration — so an Indian visa, not just a transit stamp. Check that before booking anything.

Luggage

Use the airport's left-luggage facility rather than carrying bags to Agra, and factor the time to do it.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble hauled 400 km from Makrana.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads evenly from the ground, the pietra dura of dozens of stones per flower, the four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb, and the single asymmetry in the whole building.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565, Shah Jahan's marble within it, and the Musamman Burj where he died a prisoner of his own son.

Transport and guide; with monument entrances; or with entrances and a five-star meal.

Practical

The Taj is closed on Fridays — if your layover falls on one, Agra Fort and the Baby Taj still work.
