Delhi to Agra by express train takes well under two hours against three by road, and it is immune to the one variable you cannot plan around — traffic getting out of Delhi. Over a day trip that difference is what turns a two-site itinerary into a three-site one.

The Taj Mahal, with time to do it properly rather than as a photograph stop.
Agra Fort, red sandstone outside and marble within, where the Musamman Burj looks across the Yamuna at the tomb Shah Jahan built and was later confined in sight of.
Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km west. Akbar built this capital in red sandstone from 1571 and abandoned it within about fifteen years, most likely because the water failed. Because nothing was built over it, what stands is a complete imperial city — the 54-metre Buland Darwaza, the five open storeys of the Panch Mahal, and the marble dargah of Salim Chishti, where women still tie threads to the pierced screens.
