Sunrise, and pickup from wherever you actually are.
Pickup runs from Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or Faridabad — which saves an hour if you are staying outside the centre and would otherwise spend it reaching a meeting point.
Why sunrise
The gate opens about half an hour before dawn. The first batch through has a complex holding a few hundred people rather than several thousand, and the marble runs grey, then pink, then white as the sun clears the horizon behind the dome. Between April and July it is also the only comfortable hour of the day.
The cost is the alarm. You leave in the small hours to make the three-hour run down the Yamuna Expressway.
The day
The Taj Mahal at first light with your guide, covering the pietra dura inlay, the calligraphy scaled to read evenly from below, and the construction history — around twenty years, and a workforce and material list drawn from across Asia.
Agra Fort afterwards, where the Musamman Burj looks across the Yamuna at the tomb, and where Shah Jahan spent his last eight years under his son's guard.
Then the drive back. About eight and a half hours.

Sunrise moves through the year — roughly 6:45 in late December, 5:15 in June — so your pickup time shifts with it. We confirm at booking.
From November to February, fog off the Yamuna can hide the dome for the first hour before lifting. Remarkable while it lasts, but if a clear sunrise matters, avoid late December and January.
Bring a layer. Agra before dawn in winter is properly cold.
