The Yamuna is part of the problem now

The Taj was built on a riverbank for a reason — the water reflected it, cooled the terrace, and formed the fourth side of the composition. The Yamuna at Agra today is heavily polluted and runs low for much of the year, which is why the reflection people photograph is usually the garden pool rather than the river.

It also matters structurally. The foundations sit on timber wells that were designed to stay wet, and the falling water table is one of the things conservators watch. Air pollution is the other: the marble yellows, and the Supreme Court has closed or converted industry around the city because of it.

None of that spoils the visit. It is worth knowing because it explains the restrictions you will meet — the vehicle exclusion zone, the electric buses, the ban on anything that burns.

The day

Private vehicle from New Delhi to Agra, on the banks of that river, in about three and a half hours.

Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan built it for Mumtaz Mahal from 1632 — twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble from Makrana 400 km away.

The calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so it reads evenly from the ground; the pietra dura of up to sixty stones per flower; the four minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; and the single asymmetry, Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, added off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort, and the Musamman Burj where he spent his last eight years imprisoned with the Taj in sight.

Three options

Practical

Eleven hours door to door. The Taj is closed on Fridays.

The last stretch to the monument is by electric vehicle or on foot — private cars stop outside the exclusion zone, and that applies to everyone.
