The argument for the sunrise Taj is simple. The first batch of visitors gets a monument that is nearly empty, air that has not yet reached forty degrees, and the one hour of the day when the marble genuinely changes colour, from grey through pink to white as the sun clears the horizon behind it.
The cost is the alarm. You leave Delhi in the small hours to make the three-hour run down the Yamuna Expressway and be at the gate before opening. It is worth it, and the car is a comfortable place to sleep on the way back.
How the day works
Pickup from your hotel, the airport or the railway station in Delhi. Private air-conditioned vehicle for the whole trip. You arrive in Agra before dawn and go in with the first entry. Around two hours inside with your licensed guide, then breakfast. There is time for Agra Fort afterwards depending on the option you choose, and then the drive back. About eight hours in total.

Sunrise shifts through the year. In late December the gate opens around 6:45, in June closer to 5:15, so your pickup time moves with the season. We confirm it when you book.

Winter mornings in Agra bring fog off the river. It usually lifts by nine and can make for remarkable photographs before it does, but on a heavy December morning the dome can stay hidden for the first hour.
