The garden is a map of paradise
The Taj stands at the end of a charbagh — four squares divided by two water channels meeting at a raised central tank. That is not decoration: it is the Quranic garden of paradise, with four rivers flowing from a single source, and every Mughal garden tomb before this one used the same plan.
What Shah Jahan changed was the position. Humayun's Tomb in Delhi sits at the centre of its garden; the Taj sits at the far end, against the river, so that it is seen across the full length of the water with sky behind rather than trees.
That one decision is why the photographs work — and the garden was planted with dense fruit trees until the British cleared it to lawn in the 1890s, so the view you have is a Victorian one.
The day
Pickup from your hotel, airport or any requested location in Delhi, then the Yamuna Expressway.
Taj Mahal with a private guide: the calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so it reads uniformly from the ground; the pietra dura of dozens of stones per flower; the four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; and the single asymmetry, Shah Jahan's cenotaph, placed off-axis by Aurangzeb.
Agra Fort
A walled city rather than a fort: two and a half kilometres of red sandstone begun by Akbar in 1565, with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where he spent his last eight years imprisoned by his own son, looking downriver at his wife's tomb.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Entry is ₹1,300 a head for a foreign adult with the mausoleum, ₹650 at the fort, unless your option covers them.

Throughout the day, Jitendra proved to be the true highlight of our trip. He was not only immensely helpful but also incredibly informative and patient with us. His vivid descriptions of the magnificent Taj Mahal left us in awe. Jitendra's assistance in navigating the local culture and interactions with the people added to our appreciation of the experience. Excellent trip with Santosh (driver) and Kadir (tour guide). We were picked up at 2:30am as requested and the car ride was smooth and comfortable and Santos was happy to answer any of our questions or stop if we needed the toilet. Kadir was an excellent tour guide and gave us great information as well as knowing where to get the best photos. Excellent trip and well worth the money. Great communication before and throughout the trip.
