From Delhi: Same Day Taj Mahal Trip By India's Fastest Train in Agra

Ninety minutes each way instead of four hours

The Gatimaan Express is India's fastest train — 160 km/h, Delhi to Agra in a hundred minutes, with breakfast served at the seat. Compared with the road version of this day trip it hands you four or five hours back and puts you at the monument fresh rather than stiff.

06:30 — pickup

From your hotel in Delhi, Noida or Gurugram, then a transfer to Hazrat Nizamuddin station.

08:00 — the train

Reserved seating, catering on board, and countryside going past faster than anything else on the Indian network. The train runs six days a week — not on Fridays, which is also the day the Taj closes, so the two line up neatly.

In Agra

A private air-conditioned car and a licensed local guide meet you at Agra Cantt.

Taj Mahal first. Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Your guide covers what is easy to walk past — the calligraphy cut larger as it rises so it reads evenly from the ground, the pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones, the minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would take them away from the tomb, and the single break in the symmetry.

Agra Fort afterwards — Akbar's red sandstone of 1565, Shah Jahan's marble inside, and the Musamman Burj where he spent his last eight years imprisoned by Aurangzeb with the Taj in view.

Lunch, then the evening train back into Delhi.

Three options

A car-and-guide version for travellers already in Agra; or the all-inclusive day with second-class or first-class train travel, entry tickets and lunch.

First class is a wider seat and a quieter coach; on a ninety-minute run, second class is perfectly comfortable.
