Early, and why it is worth losing the sleep
The Taj opens half an hour before sunrise. In that first hour the marble reads grey, then pink, then a cold white as the sun clears the far bank of the Yamuna, and the crowd is a fifth of what it will be by ten.
By midday the light is flat, the terrace is hot underfoot, and there are two hundred people on the central axis. The difference is not small.
The drive

Taj Mahal
Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble from Makrana 400 km away.

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for the last eight years of his life, with the Taj in view along the water. He died in that room.
