Agra has three World Heritage listings and most visitors see one. This day covers all three, which works because they sit on a line: the Taj and the Fort are a few minutes apart in the city, and Fatehpur Sikri is 40 km west on the road out.
What you see
The Taj Mahal needs no argument. Your guide gets you through the gate and takes you round the gardens, the platform and the mausoleum interior, explaining the pietra dura inlay and the way the calligraphy is sized so it reads evenly from the ground.
Agra Fort is the one people underrate. It is a working fortress rather than a monument, red sandstone rather than marble, and it is where Shah Jahan spent his last eight years confined by his son Aurangzeb, with a view across the Yamuna to the tomb he had built for his wife.
Fatehpur Sikri is the quietest and the strangest. Akbar built a whole capital here in the 1570s and abandoned it within fifteen years, most likely over water. The Buland Darwaza gateway, the Panch Mahal and the marble tomb of Salim Chishti are all still standing, largely empty.
