Picked up at your hotel, dropped back that evening

The whole day is handled end to end: a driver at your Delhi hotel between 6:30 and 7:00 am, the train out and back, a private car and a licensed guide in Agra, and the same driver returning you at night.

The train is the reason it works — a hundred minutes each way rather than four hours on the expressway, which is three hours of your day handed back.

In Agra

Taj Mahal first. Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, and white marble carted 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

A guide is the difference between a photograph and a building: the calligraphy on the great arch, cut in progressively larger letters so that it appears the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where one flower can hold sixty separate stones; the four minarets, leaning fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb; and the illusion at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the Taj seems to shrink as you approach it.

And the single asymmetry in a perfectly mirrored composition — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis beside his wife's by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort

A walled city rather than a fort: two and a half kilometres of red sandstone begun by Akbar in 1565, with his grandson's marble palaces inside — the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal — and the Musamman Burj, the tower where that grandson died a prisoner of his own son.

Lunch, then the evening train back into Delhi.

A car-and-guide day for travellers already in Agra; or the all-inclusive day with second-class chair car or first-class executive travel.

Practical

The train does not run on Fridays, which is also when the Taj is closed.
