The train removes the one thing you cannot plan around.
Delhi to Agra by superfast train takes well under two hours. By road it is three on a good day and considerably worse when Delhi traffic decides otherwise. Over a day trip that is the difference between arriving fresh and arriving stiff.
How the day runs
Hotel or airport pickup in Delhi for the morning train. At Agra a private air-conditioned car and your guide meet you, and the car stays with you all day.
The Taj Mahal with a full guided visit — the Great Gate approach, the gardens and reflecting pool, the marble platform, and the mausoleum interior. Then Agra Fort, where the Diwan-i-Am, the Jahangir Palace and the Musamman Burj sit on one circuit, and where the view across the Yamuna gives Shah Jahan's story its ending.
Late afternoon back to the station, and a car waiting in Delhi.
