From Delhi: Taj Mahal Day Trip with Traditional Indian Lunch in Agra

A day where nothing is left to sort out on arrival

Private car both ways, a guide who joins you in Agra, tickets already bought, and lunch arranged. On a thirteen-hour day the value of that is mostly in what you are not doing: no ticket counter, no working out where to eat, no negotiating anything.

The drive

Pickup from anywhere in Delhi, Gurugram or Noida in a climate-controlled private car, then the Yamuna Expressway — three to four hours.

Taj Mahal

Your guide has the entry tickets in hand, so you go straight to the lane rather than the counter.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632 for Mumtaz Mahal, who died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble from Makrana 300 km west.

The details worth someone pointing out: the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads evenly from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where a flower can hold sixty separate stones; the four minarets, leaning outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; the optical trick at the gateway; and the only asymmetry in the building, Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, set off-axis by his son.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces within, and the Musamman Burj — the tower where Aurangzeb held his father for eight years, the Taj in view along the water.

Lunch

A traditional Indian meal, sitting down, at a restaurant rather than a highway stop. Agra's own cooking is Mughlai and Braj vegetarian at once — kebabs and korma on one side, the Krishna-country vegetarian tradition on the other.
