The Taj, and the towns Krishna was born in.
Mathura and Vrindavan sit roughly halfway between Delhi and Agra, which makes this combination geographically sensible in a way most add-ons are not. It also gives you two completely different kinds of place in one day: a Mughal imperial monument, and a pair of Hindu pilgrimage towns that have been continuously sacred for two thousand years.

Mathura is held to be the birthplace of Krishna, and the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex marks the spot. It is a working pilgrimage site rather than a monument, and it feels like one.
Vrindavan, ten kilometres on, is where Krishna is said to have spent his childhood. It holds several thousand temples, from the sixteenth-century Banke Bihari to the marble ISKCON complex, and the streets are full of pilgrims, widows in white, and a very large number of monkeys who are experienced thieves of spectacles and phones.

Worth knowing
The Taj is closed on Fridays. Mathura and Vrindavan temples are open daily.
Temples require modest dress covering shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at the entrance. Many do not permit phones or cameras inside.
Watch your glasses and phone in Vrindavan. The monkeys take them deliberately and trade them back for food. This is not a joke and it happens daily.
Temples close for a few hours in the middle of the day for the deity's rest. Your guide plans around it.
Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan is extraordinary and extremely crowded. If you are travelling in March, ask before you book.
