The sunrise version of the Delhi day trip
The ordinary day trip reaches the Taj at ten, with the crowd. This one leaves Delhi before dawn and reaches it as the gates open — which is the difference between seeing the Taj and seeing the Taj properly.
It costs you sleep. Everyone who has done both says it is worth it.
The drive
Pickup from Delhi, Noida or Gurugram in a private air-conditioned car, down the Yamuna Expressway. Three and a half hours with a break, and the road is empty at that hour.
Taj Mahal at sunrise
The gates open half an hour before the sun. The marble goes grey, then pink, then a cold white; in December and January mist lies on the river behind the dome.
Your guide covers what is easy to miss — calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads the same height from the ground; pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones; minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them away from the tomb; and the single asymmetry, Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, added off-axis by his son.
Agra Fort
Akbar's red sandstone fort of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside it. The Diwan-i-Am, the Sheesh Mahal, and the Musamman Burj — the tower where Shah Jahan spent his last eight years as Aurangzeb's prisoner, looking down the river at his wife's tomb.
